Who we are
About the President and Founder
I am not your every day seminary graduate with a degree under my belt whereby others look at my credentials and come running to invite me to preach, teach, and train others. The opposite of this would more accurately describe me. I am an uneducated and untrained (Acts 4:13) child of God who has received grace and new life through the blood of Jesus Christ. I am but a weak vessel available for God’s work!
After thirty four years of wasting my life (alcoholic, married twice, and in jail twice), God in His mercy called me out of darkness into His marvelous light as Paul wrote to the Ephesians, "For you were once darkness, but now you are the light in the Lord. Walk as children of light" (Eph. 5:8). I was not a poster child for Christianity Today by any means but I was however a new creation. "Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new" (2Cor. 5:17). I remember before conversion, I brought home cigars and booze during the holidays but after God saved me, the Jesus film, and gospel tracts were now my enjoyment. The cares of this world, the deceitfulness of riches, and the desires for other things (Mark 4:19) that once characterized my lifestyle were replaced by holiness, self-sacrifice, and a passion for the gospel. Truly the old things passed away! By no means am I what I want to be but praise God I am not who I once was.
I am now forty-five years young, with my beautiful wife Jeana, and the fire in my bones for the glory of God, His people, and the lost is burning brighter than ever as I desire to turn the world upside down with the gospel. Paul said it best when he said, "I am a debtor" (Rom. 1:14). Because of the grace freely given to me, I owe the world a debt; that they would hear the good news that Jesus Christ died for sinners and three days later rose from the grave and by repentance and faith their sins would be blotted out and the wrath of God removed.
We often talk about salvation in terms of forgiveness and grace, and obviously this is true, but other blessings are given by the grace and power of God as well. Before conversion, I couldn't read well, write, or speak publicly. I grew up with a severe speech impediment that hindered my learning, speaking, and of course writing abilities, as well as creating all kinds of awkward social problems. I basically flunked out of college twice. Yet, now I am doing all of those things, not that I don't struggle with them still, but the fact that I am writing this is a display of the grace and power of God. I love to read, write, and preach whenever possible whereas before God extended grace to me these things terrified me. Oh, the goodness of God!
I am now an itinerant evangelist in Northeast Arkansas and have been preaching now for about eleven years. I now preach in various places including churches, nursing homes, assisted living facilities, and other establishments. I also enjoy house to house evangelism which I believe is the best way to reach a community.
A few years ago my dream was to form That They May Hear Ministries as an arm of the church, to sacrificially and radically serve others (see "our vision"). Lately, this dream I once had is becoming a reality! After much prayer and wrestling with the Scriptures, I took the leap of faith, stepping out on to the water like Peter and rushing to meet the giant Goliath like David. My passion to serve, give, and go with the gospel has compelled me to take this risk as John Piper wrote in his book Don’t Waste Your Life, “Jesus loves faith-filled risk for the glory of God.”
My desire for the remainder of my days on earth is summed up in what the apostle Paul wrote to the Philippians: “For to me, to live is Christ, and to die is gain” (Phil. 1:21).
